HOT-DIP GALVANIZATION
Hot-dip galvanization of steel products for granting protection against corrosion is widespread, main user of it is the building industry, mainly at a specific area of light-weight building elements and building industry pedestals. Its presence is increasing in agriculture, transmission line installation, telecommunication and civil area.
In spite of the polluted air of cities, life span of a hot-dip galvanized structure may reach 15-20 years, meanwhile the life span in the country can be even more: between 30-40 years. Galvanization technology applied in our factory is the so-called „dry” method.

Manufacturing costs
An interesting example: if the Eiffel tower was built from a hot-dip galvanized steel structure in 1889, about 10 tons of ink per year and significant amount of money spent for wages would have been saved in France. Assumed value of the damage caused by corrosion in Hungary will amount about 8-10 billion HUF. The cost of the same in the US is between 5-7 billion USD.

You should also consider maintenance and restoration costs while calculating the costs of corrosion protection systems, adding up to the manufacturing cost. Main factor is the system’s protection period. A kind of comparison of systems is to calculate costs emerging in the future as if they emerged today.
The reason of the significant difference, based on the table, is that the life span of a paint cover is substantially less than that of the hot-dip galvanization. Hot-dip covers are excessively free of maintenance.
What do standards say?
Standard EN ISO 1461 about hot-dip galvanization defines the features the hot-dip cover should have to be able to ensure proper protection against corrosion.
The standard defines the thickness of the plating for general use and for castings.
The wording ’galvanization’ or ’coating with zinc’ can be misleading
Word ’galvanization does not automatically mean hot-dip galvanization, since there are different procedures in the category of galvanization. The various technologies result in different plating covers. Protection efficiency of the platings depends mainly on the thickness of the platings. High quality hot-dip galvanization starts on the desk of a designer. The proper construction that is designed considering it will be covered, will ensure the quality work of the galvanizing workshop. This means that the steel material for hot-dip galvanization as well as the applied production technology should be in accordance with the technological requirements.
